ACUPUNCTURE
INFORMATION
HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?
Acupuncture is based on the belief that two life
forces- yin & yang-
combine to produce vital energy known as qi which circulates through
the body along
particular pathways called meridians. Disease results when this energy
flow is disrupted and thrown out of balance. Needles inserted at acupuncture
points
along the meridians stimulate neurological, immunochemical, and endocrine
responses which promote the release of endorphins and other healing chemicals
which aid the body in restoring balance and therefore, health. In this
way, acupuncture is beneficial in treating the underlying causes of disease
and
can be used to prevent illness.
DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?
Acupuncture needles are extremely thin and are not
hollow. The sensation one feels may vary from a dull ache or tingling
to an electric pulse. The
feeling is said to be the qi, or one’s energy, responding to the needle.
Most patients find acupuncture quite relaxing.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?
Generally, acute symptoms require fewer
treatments to ameliorate, while chronic disorders take more visits.
Since each person responds differently
to treatment, the frequency and number of treatments will also vary.
The frequency of treatments depends on the severity of the symptoms
and how
long one feels
relief after receiving acupuncture.
CAN ACUPUNCTURE TRANSMIT DISEASE?
Because only sterile, disposable needles
are used there is no risk in transmitting diseases from one patient
to another. Proper sterilization
procedures are
followed for all reusable items, which protects against the spread
of
infectious disease.
WHAT IF I DON'T LIKE NEEDLES?
Treatments can be done without the insertion of needles using Japanese
meridian therapy. Japanese meridian therapy, or Toyohari, was developed
in Japan by blind acupuncturists who specialized treatments using touch
and energy balancing
at acupuncture points without inserting needles. These techniques are
excellent for those people who are low on energy or uncomfortable with
needles. Many people find a treatment with Japanese meridian balancing
to be very energizing, relaxing and just as effective as a Chinese style
treatment
where the needles are inserted into the skin.
